It was quite easy to do, and I replaced my bushings and seals while I was at it. There was some sludgy oil in there, I would recommend taking them off and dumping it. 1987 Honda Shadow VT1100.

A bit of research showed the recommended fluid is Honda SS-8, which turns out to be 10W equivalent. I went one grade thicker (15W) and it did help improve the response. IMO, changing the final gear oil about 1/year should be sufficient. Since there is no combustion to screw up the oil, it will stay good for several years.
